Tributes:

fFrom the National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá'ís of the United States

April 16, 2008

Mrs. Sherna H. Deamer
208 Union Street
San Rafael, CA 94901

Dear Bahá'í Friend,

The National Spiritual Assembly was saddened to learn of the departure from this earthly life of your dearly loved mother, Margaret H. Hough. The passing of any loved one can be a difficult burden to bear-especially when it is a parent who has brought us into this world. Our deepest sympathies go out to you and your family during this difficult time.

While sorrowing with you in the loss of your mother's physical presence, we join you in honoring her many spirited contributions to the Cause of Bahá'u'lláh. Her dedication to race unity, the equality of women and men, and the oneness of religion, are remembered by this Assembly with earnest appreciation.

Please accept our heartfelt condolences and share them with your husband Bryn, and with other family members, friends and loved ones of your beloved mother. You may be confident in the prayers of the National Spiritual Assembly, in the luminous auditorium of the Bahá'í House of Worship, that the Blessed Beauty may ordain for Margaret's dear soul eternal progress in the land of lights.

With tender Bahá'í love,

Juana C. Conrad
Deputy Secretary-General

National Spiritual Assembly
of the Bahá'ís of the United States

Dearest Sherna and Bryn, - please also convey to Bonnie and Bill

May Margaret's blessed soul soar freely and joyously in the immortal realms and her family members be uplifted by the spiritual legacy she has bestowed upon them.

I still vividly remember my first meeting time with Margaret at the Baha'i National Center for a gathering of people passionate about race unity - sometime in the 1980s. That is when Nas and I first met her and were impressed by her convictions and energy.

Later we were happy to host her at our home as a representative from the San Diego community in a Bahai delegation to the California Women's Agenda held in SF one year after the 1995 UN Conference on Women in Beijing. This effort was coordinated through the National Office of External Affairs and its representatives in thec Bay Area.

Also recall her participation at least one Association for Bahai Studies conference held in SF when I was informed of and received copies of the impressive work "Bridging our Faiths" that she assisted in developing along with Robert Stockman and others for the Interreligious Council of San Diego, printed by the Paulist Press, for the San Diego city schools, ensuring that their social studies curriculum had access to reliable information about the faith communities. This publication served as a resource for a study group on this topic at our home years later.

Our family was always so pleased when she was able to visit with Mama Jun and I in Bel Marin - on at least 2 occasions that I recall - or to chat with us on the phone.

And my final fond memory of her was at the Council's evening session with the friends in the Marin, Sonoma and Solano counties.

I'm just returning from travels to NABI with the Council and am catching up on messages.I am copying the Regional Council and the National Assembly to be sure that her name will be added to the prayer lists of these institutions.

With loving greetings and prayers,
Charleen

Dearest Friends, Bryn, Sherna and Bonnie

We are praying together for the progress of Margaret. As we were remembering her. We wish to thank you all for taking care of her. Indeed Margaret was a loving mother to us all. You can also remember the gift she gave to little bryn. It has grown tenfold. The sheep is now 8 eight in number. Florence also recieved books from Margaret,it is now that she has promised to read them. So wonderful was her love and spirit. On Tuesday night we had some prayers for her. So really this has become a challenge, something to ponder about. We pray for you all and wish God will give you all the strength and power to carry on with what Margaret had started. We appreciate her peace efforts and would like to know or to receive some of her speeches if possible. We are involved with peace making here as you know our country has been undergoing turmoil and post election violence. Thank you God bless you.
Please Bryn forward this letter to Bonnie.
We miss you all.
Thanks
Barnabas and Family

Dear Bryn and Sherna,

I send my condolences on the passing of Sherna's mother, knowing you will miss her greatly. I recall that you said she and Bahia were great friends, and when I met Bahia several years ago, she confirmed
this.

Perhaps we'll meet again here in California; it's been four or five years, I think, since you traveled this way during Ridvan.

All best wishes,
Laurel

Dear Bonnie, Sherna, Bryn,

I'm thinking of you four (Tutu plus the three of you) and the vigil you
have kept together over the past few weeks. Tutu is so fortuate and
deserving to have your love and committment to her passing. Alden and I
made a sandtray blessing for her and have been keeping a candle vigil
for the past four days and morning meditation with her and you all. Tut
had such a full life laced with passion for justice, the advancement of
women, civil rights, art, equality, spirtual depth, her legacy as
mother, grandmother and great grandmother, and the fun quirky side of
human nature: I am sure this lives on in all of us and those she has touched.
Some of us have been the special keepers of her stories and I count
myself as one of these during her stay in Del Mar--and these will live
on in me and be passed on to Lauren, Miles, and Ella.
Just wanting you to know that you are preciously in my heart as
is Tutu's journey to the next realm --her send-off is gloriously
present!

Loving you all and uniting in spirit with you, Lali

Dear Hough, Sherna and Bonnie:

Thanks for keeping me up to date with Tutu's condition. Right now I am with my girl friend, Ann, at the Findhorn Foundation near Invernes in Northern Scottland. It is a very beautiful and special place and it feels like a good place to pray and connect with Tutu. It is also a place that is trying to put into action many of the ideals that Tutu aspired to. Such as peace with the world, peace with the community, peace with the mind, and peace with the spirit, religous and spiritual acceptance, equality of women and equal rights, healing and regenerating the environment, and community building. Before I left, I thought I would be able to spend some time with her after I moved to Santa Cruz, but things have changed. I am so greatfull to have such a beautiful, loving and supportive family. You have all shaped my life in many ways and I am so thankful knowing that no matter whatever direction my heart takes me I have your acceptance, love and support. I hope that the next time you see Tutu that you can say a few words from me to her in person that I can only pray to her from such a long way away.

Dear Tutu:

I love you so much and can't tell how much I appreciate all the love and kindness you have given me ever since I was a little baby.

I remember when you came to visit us in Nigeria and we all went to France together; when I used to visit you every weekend in Del Mar from when I was 11 until I was 18 yrs. old; when I used to live with you when I went to UCSD and when we met in Hiafa to go on pigrimage. Your unconditional love and support during my life have ment so much to me. I am holding you and the rest of the family in my hart and in my prayers, but I feel the best way to honor you is in my every action done in mind word and deed. May my actions be of service to the highest good done with awareness, love and kindness, justice and compassion for the good of all. I love you so much.

Wishing you all of my love forever - Alden
